As I have previously mentioned, over the course of the last two years I
have attended a great number of exhibitions and art events, from which I have
received a number of leaflets and business cards. I aim, this year to follow
these up, researching and writing about them.
Just before the summer, I attended an exhibition in London, arranged by the
crafts council. 'Collect' is an international art fair for contemporary objects
which this year was held in the snatching gallery. 'Collect' aims to celebrate
contemporary arts and crafts and their makers, who would not usually be
advertised through art galleries.
Through my work placement last term at Smiths Row art gallery, bury St Edmunds,
I was given a ticket to gets into the exhibition for free. Normally I would not
have attended an exhibition like this because it seemed to be more art and sculptural based, not necessarily related to textiles. However on attendance,
I was pleasantly surprised. The exhibition was crammed full of amazing
designers and their wonderfully original creations. It was an inspiration to
encounter the the vast array of objects from a range of backgrounds, across the
art sphere. It made me question the boundaries of textile design and has made
me think about my use of materials, which could be a little more experimental.
Whilst at the exhibition, I took down the names of lots of different designers
and companies which I found particularly interesting and wanted to research
further. My aim is to complete a few more detailed blog posts about some of
these designers.
