Ba7....... Learning agreement 1st draft

Norwich University of the Arts
Learning Agreement

Course and Unit Number: Textiles Ba7
Name: Nathan Mison
Proposal:  What do you intend to do?
In Ba7, I aim to draw on the positives of all my work over the past two years at university. I have learnt a great deal and want these last two projects of the course to reflect this. Nature is and always has been a major part of me as an individual and is a great inspiration to my work. This will form the subject for the project, focusing on a beach theme. I want to explore a different aspect of the nature theme, to push myself to experiment in an area I feel comfortable in.
The idea is to explore a beach/seaside trend in the textile industry, bringing in my own responses based on local beach resorts and gaining a variety of sources of inspiration to add a splash of colour to the Great British Summer. In order to complete this concept, I will look into current and future trends; particularly a recent trend which plays on the intertwining of a busy city life and more natural surroundings. This focuses on the idea of bringing the outside indoors and vice a versa, bringing a sense of nature to urban lifestyles whilst adding comfort and colour to outdoor spaces. In addition, I want to explore the evolution of garden furniture and outdoor living.
Through my trend research I shall reference both the fashion and interior markets with a specific focus on creating a set of designs for the interior design and interior decoration sectors of the design market. Set against my visual and written research, I will create a portfolio of work in response to the beach theme. I will explore my ideas, initially through drawing, moving on through the use of mixed media, mainly print and stitch. In my work I want to create a personal, individual design creation.
Although I understand the importance of it, I do not want to focus on the idea of mass production, instead looking into and exploring the handmade sector. This exploration into a more boutique, high end market which is based on quality over quantity will be backed up with research into the approach with a focus on independent design/traders. I do believe that there is a place for this way of working, particularly in recent years where the consumer is more willing to pay more for a design/product with a personal edge which is seen to promote quality.

My research report I’ll directly relate to the core values behind my studio work, looking into the textile market. I will be looking into the future of the textile market, asking whether the future of textiles is mass produced and owned by large corporal companies. Through this discussion, I shall explore the current textile market and its development into a more industrial approach, alongside which, I will research the value of individual/boutique designers in textiles. Is their popularity enough to maintain an individual, more bespoke approach to textiles
