Ba7....... Polly Binns

modernist aesthetic: Polly BinnsPolly Binns is a textile designer, specialising in embroidery, who is a member of England's prestigious 62 group.

when she began her design career, Polly Binns started in the medium of clay, but was soon introduced too the process of weaving, in which she aims to understand the essence of cloth. Within her first pieces of work, she began to explore the artist's canvas, influenced by minimalist art. In response to these influences, Polly Binns was drawn the medium of mixed media in which she; folded, pleated and stitched cloth to raise a surface or texture.

As an artist, Polly Binns has a very structured, set way of creating her designs. Before she does any work in her studio, she goes out for a walk, the same walk every time, in the Blakeney Channel on the north coast of Norfolk, for inspiration.

Whilst linking to my work through her focus on the Norfolk coast for inspiration, I love Polly Binns' use of mixed media in a more abstract way, exploring materials and processes simply to present all of the senses surrounding her. Although I admire this way of working, I cannot work so abstractly, my brain will not let me! Instead I think , I will try to think more carefully about my choice of material and process to create the desired effect that I want in my work.
