Proposal:  What do you intend to do?

            The focus of this project, the last project of this course, is to look forward to life post-university. Whilst everyone prepares to create their portfolio for when they finish university, I want to make this project relevant to my own work and intended practice together.

            Post-university I aim to go into teaching, with a focus on primary school teaching.  For this reason in this project I want to relate my work in this unit to education. To develop a portfolio that will be appropriate to my chosen career, that of teaching, rather than a straightforward textiles portfolio.

For this reason, my aim for Ba8 is to create a large collection of lesson plans with the aim of  exploring how I would endeavour to teaching textiles and to look at how and what I could teach through the use of textiles. The plans will be aimed at three different age groups; primary school, secondary school and adult learning. The lesson plans will be displayed in folders, typically one will contain;

§  An A4 sheet of paper with lesson plan based on notes to the teacher. (This will be guidelines of how the lesson should run and what the pupils should achieve.
§  Text Box: Example of lesson plan Pictures or diagrams showing a step by step guide to technique. (Hand-out or worksheet relating to work aimed at helping to show the pupil what they need to do).
§  An example of the finished work. (In sample form).
§  Research behind the lesson plan. (This will help to relate back to textiles or to the curriculum).
§  Further teaching which could be achieved to take the learning further. (Experimental samples, written ideas or diagrams showing the possibilities).
§  I intend to actually teach these sessions in Hardwick Primary School, Bury St Edmunds in a Year One/Two class. If the session had been taught, proof will be displayed through images and an evaluation.

Because I have decided to focus on a more unusual route of approaching this unit of the course, I need to make sure that all my work stays relevant to the learning outcomes as well as staying true to what I want to get out of my final unit. Through the course of this project I must stay focused to the learning outcomes;
*        In relation to LO7, my work will constantly be narrowed and focused, aiming to explore technique of craft and construct, with the aim of keeping traditional techniques alive. Teaching is a passing on and I want to pass on my own knowledge in textiles. Constant evaluation will be evident in my PDP blog and journal and my work will be explored and evaluated against the national curriculum and other research into the education system, including first-hand experience in a primary school. Displayed in research file.
*        To conform to LO8, Research will be constant and consistent throughout the project. This is an important part of teaching and will link closely to my dissertation report on craft production. My research in my report will be displayed in a file and has influenced my work in this unit to push to boundaries of my subject, not just reinventing the wheel, but passing on ideas and techniques for other to continue.
*        As research is important to the project, LO9 will be achieved through a vast array of research into teaching and textile practice. This will be displayed in an organised fashion and will create depth to my planning and shows ideas behind my thought process. There will be an evident link between my research and my body of work.
*        LO10 focuses on the planning and organisation of the project. This is tackled head on in this project through clear planning and organisation through timetabling and a notebook to jot down ideas. Planning is also evident in the tailoring of this project towards my intended route into teaching post-uni.  All of the skills I develop and learn in this last unit will be incredibly useful for my work as a teacher which involves meticulous planning.
*        In relation to LO11, research, in particular first hand research in a local primary school. This is vital planning and research into the notions and progressing of teaching. This will allows me to evaluate the skills that I already possess and how best to apply them to teaching.
*        LO12 is focused on clear presentation of work and links with a wider audience. In order to create these plans, my work will need to be organised and clearly presented to be successful in what I aim to produce, a set of lesson plans. Research and PDP will display a progression of ideas throughout the project from research to gaining a skills set, to developing a taught lesson plan.

  • Completed 4,000 Word Industry Report & Bibliography.                                                          
  • Research file based on work for Industry Report.
  • Link to Pinterest page with collection of inspiring images.
  • Link to twitter page with regular updates of my working practice.
  • Research and inspiration file, containing designer research & visual, inspirational images and ideas to lesson planning.
  • PDP journal, containing thought and opinion, including reflection of my practice, aim of posting on a daily basis.
  • PDP Blog, another source of reflection, similar to journal, less in-depth, broader, talking about everything that’s going on in terms of the course, not just the work I am creating, aim of posting on a daily basis.
  • Notebook with notes from timetabled university lecture, seminars and tutorials; also with planned timetable of work and updated to do lists for organisation.
  • Collection of lesson/workshop plans based of the three age groups with written and textile based work.
  • Notebook of ideas and drawings, thinking about idea for lessons.
  • Research file of research into teaching ideas and lesson plan creation.
