9th January 2014  - The knitwear Market

The knitwear market is much more larger than most think, it is a major part of our fashion market. Not only is knitting used in t shirts and jumpers, but also in stretch-wear fabrics, sportswear, active-wear, hosiery and intimate apparel.

Knitted garments are very popular amongst the whole fashion market from women, to men and childrenswear, with all demographic groups because of the inherent qualities of comfort, fit and softness, warmth and coolness through sweat absorption, durability and easy laundering.

The development of the business market and the desire for a more smart casual look has and is continuing to increase the demand for knitwear in all sectors of fashion. Knitwear is a wide marker from high end designers like Missoni and well known brands such as Sonia Rykiel and many design houses value knitwear as the foundation of their collections.

There are two main approaches to knitting in the design world...

1. FULLY AUTOMATED
the technological advances mean that whole knitted garments can be created without labour costs, sewing or finishing. this makes the knitwear more profitable than most other forms of fashion, which equates to lower manufacturing and retail costs.

2. LABOUR INTENSIVE
hand-operated knitting machines allow for a greater flexibility of design. Their use can provide a vast amount of employment at a very low investment. Examples of these are in China and Bangladesh.
