Knitted fabrics are created from loops of yearn, horizontal rows are known as courses whilst vertical rows are known as Wales. This type of material is stretchy and gives them good draping and crease resistant qualities, however this is also their downfall because they can lose their shape and get worn by the body. As the structure of knitting is fairly open in comparison to other fabrics, it can keep the body warmer or colder, depending on the choice of yarn.

Most knitting constructions and ideas have been developed from hand knitting. However, due to recent technological advances, it is impossible to knit garments now by hand. Knitted jumpers can be created in 45mins. Having said this it is still clear that there is a definite market for individual one off, hand knitted garments.
