Research - Basso and Brooke

Whilst doing some research, looking into ideas of what I can focus on, taking the idea of patterns in nature out of the boring floral prints that many designers are creating, I stumbled upon the Basso and Brooke spring/summer collection from 2012 at London Fashion week. This collection of work is based on a natural theme, but creates bold and striking print, in colour and style, which are placed opposite each other to clash, but show each other off.

BASSO & BROOKE – LONDON FASHION WEEK SS12

Heading the style notes at the Basso & Brooke show was an anonymous poem ending “…It is the roots that make the branches. It is the darkness that gives birth to the light.”
The theme of ‘light and dark’ was something which featured prominently from the moment of stepping into the Old Sorting Office where three candles sat lighting the entrance.
The runway itself was lit by a hundred or so subtly twinkling light bulbs which at the beginning of the catwalk hung eclectically before progressing into a more uniformed alignment. The overall ethereal effect created an atmosphere similar to sitting under the stars at night and served to draw me into their world.
The darkness and their artificial sky was then disrupted by the first beats of the music which caused the lights to flash in sync with every base note before the first model took to the runway.
The binding element of their collection was the frenetic print featured in all their pieces that they juxtaposed with soft chiffon and silk-jersey causing the designs to seemingly oscillate with the model’s stride.
Whilst working with asymmetry within their prints, they used a spectrum of tropical colours and hard-edged foliage as a design base and in a playsuit they began with this theme before crescendoing down into monochrome trousers.
Maxi dresses made up the final pieces of their collection which flowed effortlessly despite the complexity of the panelling and construction.
